A Brief History of PTO

  • 1995 - 1st Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed Conference, Omaha, Nebraska
    Sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha
    Augusto Boal and about 250 people attend.
  • 1996 - 2nd PTO Conference, Omaha, Nebraska
    Sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha
    Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal attend, drawing over 800 people!
    Peter McLaren is also featured.
  • 1997 - 3rd PTO Conference, Omaha, Nebraska
    Sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha
    Augusto Boal, Ira Shor, & Geneva Smitherman are featured.
    Paulo Freire dies this year.
  • 1998 - 4th PTO Conference, Omaha, Nebraska
    Donaldo Macedo, Myra Bergman Ramos, and Jimmie Santiago Baca are featured.
    Donaldo & Myra pay tribute to Paulo in a joint presentation.
    Work begins to develop PTO as a non-profit organization
    PTO becomes incorporated in Nebraska.

  • 1999 - 5th PTO Conference, New York, New York
    Conference Chair: Carol Lloyd. Co-Chair: Stanley Aronowitz (CUNY)
    The conference makes it first move beyond Omaha and features special guests Nita Freire & Maxine Greene, with Doug Paterson, Carol Lloyd, Jan Cohen-Cruz, Donaldo Macedo, Michelle Fine, Greg Tewksbury, & Stanley Aronowitz.
    PTO's first business meeting is held at the conference. Officers are elected for 1999-2000.
    PTO is recognized by the IRS as a non-profit organization.
