Housing Accommodation Options for PTO 2017

PTO 2017 in Detroit has reserved two housing blocks, a hotel and a lower-cost residence hall option. If you have any questions, email conference@ptoweb.org and put “housing” in the subject line.

Hotel Option: Hotel St. Regis Detroit

  • 3071 West Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48202 (1.3 miles or 2.1km from conference location)
  • Make your reservation under PTO’s block rate HERE.
  • You can also call 1-855-408-7738 and say you are booking under the “PTO Conference Group”.
  • Reserve by Thursday, April 13 to secure the conference rate.
  • Rooms are first-come, first-served. We recommend you reserve as soon as possible, as our block will likely fill early. Because of the extremely high demand for hotels in Detroit that weekend, it may be hard to find other accommodations after our room blocks have filled.

Options and Rates

  • One king bed: $129/night USD plus tax on conference nights (June 1-4) and $169/night USD plus tax on pre-conference nights (May 28-31; price differential due to smaller reservation block)
  • Two queen beds: $129/night USD plus tax on conference nights (June 1-4) and $169/night USD plus tax on pre-conference nights (May 28-31; price differential due to smaller reservation block)
  • Room includes complimentary high speed internet access in all guest rooms!

Hotel Selection Process

Here are some factors we considered as we chose Hotel Blake:

  • PTO respects labor. This hotel appears on the Chicago labor “Please Patronize” list. Many hotels were disqualified because of questions about labor politics. We aim to be financially accessible, but we also know that most of our members do not want us to get cheaper prices on the backs of workers. We know labor justice matters to you.
  • Some years our conferences are in larger cities; on other years we are in smaller cities and towns. We want to visit a wide variety of places. On the years we visit larger cities like Chicago, the hotel prices are almost always higher. On those years, participants tend to spend more on housing but save on flights and transportation from the airport. On the years we are in smaller cities and towns, housing prices tend to be lower, but flights and ground transport are often more expensive. Each site holds different possibilities and challenges.
  • The conference location is relatively close to the hotel; not everyone is able to walk long distances.
  • The hotel is close to public transportation, which makes it easier to save on the cost of travel from airports.
  • Summer is high tourist season in Chicago. Many factors go into the choice of the dates for the PTO conference, and the weekend when PTO was able to hold its conference this year coincided with huge conventions in the city. As a result, prices everywhere are relatively high that weekend—and have been high since long before Chicago was even identified as the conference location. This was the lowest price for which we could negotiate because Hotel Blake has a relationship with Columbia College Chicago. We examined many other options and exhausted them before publishing final housing info. For example, Holiday Inn, a hotel many people might perceive as cheaper, is actually far more expensive that weekend than Hotel Blake (and has been so for a while).
