PTO President Kelly Howe's response to Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal regarding Pedagogy of the Oppressed
2012 Conference
Berkeley, California, USA
May 31 - June 3, 2012
Interpreting the World, Changing the World
This year's PTO conference theme is inspired by the 11th Thesis on Feuerbach:
“The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it.”
Long before “change” became a branded campaign slogan, Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) and Pedagogy of the Oppressed (PO) have been about fundamentally changing the world. Continuously changing and changed through dialogue, action and reflection, TO and PO are theory and practice of change. How has “change” been co-opted? What are the ways in which acquiescence, denial, mystification or “change” (in scare quotes) has superseded real, substantive change? What would real change look like? What is the change we want?

The Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed International Journal
The mission of the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal is to create a scholarly space of critical agency where social justice and critical democratic participation prevail through praxis. The PTO Journal seeks to encourage the formulation of theories that interrogate the authentic historical selves and cultural patterns, social interlocution, ecological concerns and practices, the digital divide, and global issues to prepare the grounds for a better world. Furthermore, it seeks to complete the praxis circle by illuminating documented case studies/actions that promote change by applying egalitarian theories. From Forum to Legislative Theatre with Augusto and Julian Boal is an informative, insightful look into the methods and practice of Forum and Legislative Theatre as developed by Augusto Boal.
This DVD is not a documentary, but rather a documented process intended to assist practitioners of all kinds, those beginning their exploration and use of the techniques as well as those seeking further insight, with their work towards implementing and developing Forum and Legislative Theatre.
The 3-day workshop with Augusto and Julian Boal took place as part of the 14th Annual International PTO Conference (May 2008) in Omaha, Nebraska, and culminated in a symbolic Legislative Theatre session at the Omaha City Council.
Over 18 hours of material has been edited into easily viewable sections, each highlighting a tool, a method, a technique of rehearsal, or insights into the greater body of work that is the Theatre of the Oppressed from Augusto and Julian Boal.
